The fish meal (powder) production company in Iceland.
The Company::
The company KNA was initiated in Iceland by Björn Jónsson (supreme court attorney at law) and Julius B. Kristinsson (a fish physiologist) who jointly own and operate Sjósókn ehf. a company in the business of developing new methods for utilizing seafood material. KNÁ ehf. was established in year 2000. A production unit has been built in the town of Patreksfjörður in the Vestfirðir area (north-west part) in Iceland. KNA is in the process of making contacts with distributors and food companies in the international market with the intention of establishing marketing and sales channels. The main focus of the company involves starting sales of mixture of cod-catfish powder to the specialized feed market and establishing marketing and sales of cod powder to the baby food market and other market segments in the food market. Catfish powder and shrimp powder will also be produced, intended mostly for the specialized animal feed market.
Production technology:
The powder is produced by a novel method where the raw material (fresh fish
material or shrimp shells) is ground into fine particles and dried at the
same time in a few seconds at a high temperature and air velocity thereby
maintaining protein and other important substances intact through the process.
The production method is based on mill drying technology (e.g. used for making
wheat flour) that has been adapted for fish and other seafood that have a
low fat content. With this technology, one can control the particle size of
the product and, thereby, cater to the needs of the customers. Examination
of the drying method and tests on the fish powder and the shrimp powder by
the Fisheries Research Laboratory in Iceland confirmed its good quality.
